What Is Applique Digitizing?
Applique digitizing is the technique of building an embroidery file that combines a cut fabric layer with stitching, rather than covering an area entirely in thread. The digitizer breaks the design into three stitch elements: a placement stitch that marks exactly where the fabric goes, a tackdown stitch that holds the fabric in position, and a cover stitch that seals the raw edge and defines the shape. Between those elements the file carries color stops and trim commands that pause the machine so the operator can lay the fabric and trim the excess.
Applique earns its place when a design has large, solid areas of color. Filling those areas with stitching drives up stitch count, thread use and puckering. A fabric layer covers the same area with a fraction of the stitches, sits flatter on the garment, and reads as a cleaner block of color from a distance.

Nothing in this is automated. Every stop, satin width and trim in your file is placed by a digitizer, never generated by auto-digitizing software.

You receive a machine-ready applique file with every color stop and trim command built in, delivered in the format your machine reads. Native working files (.EMB, .PXF, .OFM) are available on request.

What Applique Digitizing Has to Get Right
Applique carries digitizing decisions no other technique has, and each one is where a file passes or fails on the machine.

Placement accuracy
The placement stitch has to trace the cut fabric edge exactly. Wide, and fabric sits outside the cover; narrow, and a stitched border shows with no fabric under it.

Tackdown choice
A run tackdown suits stable fabrics; a zigzag tackdown holds fabrics that fray. It sits inside the cover stitch, so its width is set to stay hidden.

Cover stitch by edge
Satin width changes along the shape — wide on long straight edges, narrower and denser on tight corners and curves so the thread wraps without gapping.

Fabric and fray control
Twill, felt and poly-blend applique fabrics behave differently under the needle. Cover-stitch density is matched to the fabric to seal the edge without cutting into it.

Multi-piece layering
Designs with overlapping fabric pieces are sequenced so each piece is placed, tacked and covered in order, with a color stop between each.

Base-fabric density
Cover-stitch density is set for the garment underneath, not a default, so the finished applique sits flat with no puckering around the edge.
On request we also export the placement outline as a separate cut layer, so pre-cut or laser-cut applique pieces match the file to the millimeter. Similar edge-control decisions apply in patch file digitizing and chenille digitizing.

Do you supply the applique fabric?
No. We deliver the digitized file only. The fabric is cut and placed at your machine during the run, and the file carries the color stops that tell the operator exactly when to lay and trim it.

Can any design be turned into an applique file?
Not every design. Applique works best on large, solid areas of color; fine detail and small lettering stay as standard fill or satin stitching. We tell you which parts of your artwork suit applique before we build the file.

Will an applique file run on my machine?
Yes, as long as your machine reads one of the formats we deliver. Applique is produced through color stops and trim commands that every commercial and home machine understands, so a correctly digitized file runs on Tajima, Brother, Janome, Melco and the rest.

Can you include a cut line for a laser or die cutter?
Yes. We export the placement outline as a separate cut layer on request, so pre-cut applique pieces line up with the file exactly.
