Embroidery File Formats and the Machines That Read Them

An embroidery file is a set of stitch instructions, not a picture. Which extension you need depends entirely on the brand of machine running the job. This page maps every format we deliver to the machines that read it, and explains the two things that catch people out: the difference between a stitch file and a source file, and why the right extension alone does not guarantee a clean run.

TWO KINDS OF FILE

Stitch files and source files are not the same thing

Every format on this page falls into one of two groups. Knowing which group a file belongs to tells you what you can and cannot do with it later, and it is the single most common source of confusion we see at upload.

Stitch file compared with source file A stitch file stores fixed needle coordinates, color stops and trim commands, and cannot be meaningfully resized. The practical consequence: a stitch file is an output, a source file is the thing that produced it.

This matters most when a design needs to change size. If you hold only a DST and you need the same logo at twice the width, scaling it in software keeps the original stitch count while stretching the area those stitches have to cover. The result is a thin, gappy fill on a large design, or a dense, board-stiff patch on a small one. The design has to be rebuilt from the source file, or digitized again from the artwork.

DST Tajima Stitch file The most widely accepted format across commercial equipment. Carries stitch data and color change commands, but not the thread colors themselves, so color assignment happens at the machine.
PES Brother / Babylock Stitch file Exists in several generations. An older machine may not read a file written in a newer PES version, which is why we ask which model you run.
JEF Janome Stitch file Written for Janome hoop sizes. Confirm your hoop before scaling anything up.
EXP Melco / Bernina Stitch file Often travels with a companion color file. If you receive two files, keep them together in the same folder.
VP3 Husqvarna Viking / Pfaff Stitch file Carries color and thread information alongside the stitch data.
XXX Singer Stitch file Singer machine format. Check the model’s maximum design area before ordering a large design.
ART Bernina Stitch file Bernina’s own format. Bernina machines also read EXP, so tell us which your workflow expects.

Other formats you may come across

These are not formats we produce or deliver. Some machines and software use them alongside the seven above, and it helps to know what they actually are if you see one on a file.

PEC Brother / Baby Lock / Bernina The stitch-command block embedded inside a PES file. Not a separate delivery format, it is what actually runs the needle.
PHC / PHX Baby Lock Not a stitch format at all. These carry a design over USB or Wi-Fi to the machine, then the machine reads the PES or PEC data inside. Nothing stitches directly from a PHC or PHX file.
HUS / VIP / SHV Husqvarna Viking Older or alternate Husqvarna formats that exist alongside VP3, depending on the machine’s age and software version.
PCS Pfaff An alternate Pfaff format some models use instead of, or alongside, VP3.
SEW Janome / Elna A companion format to JEF on some Janome models, and the default on many Elna machines.

BEFORE YOU RUN IT

The right extension does not guarantee a clean run

A file can carry the correct extension for your machine and still sew badly. Three things decide that, and none of them are visible in the filename.

What happens to stitch density when a stitch file is resized At original size the fill is even. Scaled up, the same number of stitches spreads across a larger area and the fill becomes thin and gappy. Scaled down, the stitches crowd and the fabric stiffens. Stitch count is fixed in a stitch file. Change the dimensions and only the spacing moves.

    Hoop and design area

    Every machine has a maximum sewing field. A file sized past that limit will not load, or will load and clip. Check the design area for your specific model, not just the brand, before ordering a large design.

    Format version

    Some formats have been revised across machine generations. PES is the usual case. A file written for a current machine can fail to open on an older one even though both use the same extension.

    Fabric the file was built for

    Underlay and pull compensation are set for a specific material. A file digitized for structured twill will behave differently on performance knit even though the file itself is unchanged. Tell us the garment and the file is built for it.

A file that will not open on your computer is not broken. Embroidery files hold stitch instructions rather than pictures, so they open in embroidery software or on the machine itself, and nowhere else.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which embroidery file format is the most universal?

    DST is accepted by the widest range of commercial equipment, which is why it is the default request from production shops. It carries stitch data and color change commands but not the thread colors themselves, so the operator assigns colors at the machine using the color chart supplied with the file.

  • Can I just rename a file to change its format?

    No. The extension is a label, not the contents. Changing a .DST to .PES leaves the internal structure untouched and the machine will either reject it or misread it. Converting properly means writing the design out again in the target format, which is why we generate each format from the source file rather than renaming one output.

  • Why will a DST or PES file not open on my computer?

    Because it is not an image. Embroidery files hold stitch instructions, coordinates, color stops and trims, so your computer has nothing installed that knows how to display them. They open in embroidery software or on the machine itself. Nothing is wrong with the file.

  • Can you resize an embroidery file I already have?

    Small adjustments are possible. Anything beyond that needs the design rebuilt, because a stitch file holds a fixed number of stitches and scaling only changes how far apart they sit. Send us the file and the size you need and we will tell you honestly whether it can be adjusted or has to be digitized again.

  • What does it cost to receive more than one format?

    Nothing extra. Pricing is flat by design type: $15 Standard for left-chest logos, polos and caps, $25 Portrait for vertical designs, badges and detailed artwork, $60 Full Size for jacket backs, large designs and event logos. Formats are not priced separately and neither are revisions.
