DEFINITION
What is patch digitizing?
Patch digitizing is the process of converting patch artwork, a badge, crest, insignia or logo, into a machine-embroidery file with the border built as its own stitch structure rather than left for the machine to guess. The border is what separates a patch file from a standard logo file: it has to hold its shape under a merrowed or satin finish and survive being trimmed free from the hoop without the edge stitches pulling loose.
We digitize patch files. We do not manufacture, sell or ship physical patches. What you do with the finished file, cut and sew it yourself, send it to a manufacturer or run it in-house, is up to you.

How we digitize patch files
We digitize every patch file by hand in Wilcom EmbroideryStudio. For each job our digitizers make the decisions that keep the border and the artwork inside it clean.

Border stitch type
A wide merrowed-style chain for a classic patch look, or a tighter satin column for a smaller or more detailed badge shape.

Density and underlay for the backing
Twill, felt and canvas backing each take density differently. We set fill and underlay so the design doesn’t show through or pucker on the fabric it’s actually sewn to.

Stitch sequencing
The border is sequenced to finish last and clean, which is what keeps the edge from fraying once the patch is cut free from the hoop.

Pull compensation on curves and points
Round badges and shield shapes put the most stress on the border. We widen columns slightly around curves and corners so they land at the intended size once the machine runs.
You send the artwork, you receive a machine-ready patch file. You never touch the software.
MANUAL VS AUTO
Manual vs auto-digitized patch borders
Auto-digitizing software produces bad patch borders, and the border is where a patch file lives or dies. Software applies one border setting across the whole shape, so curves pull narrow, points blow out wide, and the edge frays after the first trim. Manual digitizing sets the border per shape instead.

Choosing a border for your patch shape
The right border depends on the patch’s shape and size, not a single fixed rule. These are the defaults our digitizers start from before adjusting for your specific artwork.

Backing fabric and density
- Twill
- Standard density holds well and is the most common patch backing
- Felt
- Lighter density. Felt is looser than twill and shows through if the fill is packed too tight
- Canvas
- Slightly denser underlay for stability on a stiffer weave

Do you digitize patch files?
Yes. We convert patch artwork into a machine-ready embroidery file, including the border stitch structure, in any of our seven delivered formats.
Do you manufacture or sell patches?
No. We digitize the file only. What you do with it afterward, cut and sew it yourself or send it to a manufacturer, is up to you.
Can you digitize a merrowed border patch?
Yes. The merrowed-style border is set as its own stitch element during digitizing, not left for the machine to interpret.
How much does patch digitizing cost?
Simple patch logos are $15 Standard. Detailed badge designs with multiple elements or fine border work are $25 Portrait.
How fast can I get a patch file?
Rush turnaround is 1 to 2 hours at no additional charge. More complex patch files can take up to 8 hours.
What’s the difference between patch digitizing and left chest digitizing?
Patch digitizing is a border-driven technique, the merrowed or satin edge is what defines the file. Left chest digitizing is a placement, with no border requirement, and often shares the same $15 Standard tier.
