What Is a DST File Viewer?
A DST file viewer is a tool that reads the stitch data inside a DST file and renders it as a visual stitch simulation, showing the design, color sequence, and stitch count without needing embroidery digitizing software installed on your computer. DST is Tajima’s native embroidery format, and it is one of the most common formats in commercial embroidery because most multi-needle machines can run it even when it isn’t their native brand format. Some people search for a “DST reader” instead of a “DST viewer.” Both terms describe the same function: opening the file and displaying what’s inside it, not editing it.

Thread color note: not every format stores color data. EXP files don’t carry it, so the viewer shows placeholder colors for each color block. Click any swatch to recolor it and preview against your actual thread plan, but the file itself won’t include that data until it’s saved in a format that does.

Formats This Viewer Can’t Decode
Some files load but won’t render:

These use compressed or proprietary encodings that browsers can’t decode reliably, regardless of file size or design complexity. This isn’t a bug in the upload, it’s a limitation of the format itself outside dedicated desktop software.

DST vs. Other Embroidery Formats
DST gets searched by name far more often than “embroidery file viewer” because it’s the most common machine-native format in commercial embroidery. Tajima created it, but most commercial multi-needle machines across other brands can also run a DST file, which is why shops and hobbyists alike default to asking for a DST viewer specifically, even when what they actually need is to check any embroidery file, regardless of format. This tool covers both searches: it opens DST files as its primary use case, and everything else listed above as the broader case.

Why Preview a File Before You Stitch It
Checking a file before it runs saves the material, thread, and machine time it takes to sew a design that doesn’t work. A stitch simulation shows you three things a raw file can’t:

Whether it fits the placement
Catching a sizing mismatch on screen costs nothing. Catching it after the fabric is hooped costs the backing, the thread, and the slot on the machine.

Whether the color sequence matches
A file with color changes out of order runs fine mechanically, it just sews the wrong thread in the wrong place, and that only shows up once it’s already stitched.

Whether it fits your production window
Stitch count and run time tell you if the design fits the slot you’ve planned for it before the machine ever starts.
This matters most on files you didn’t digitize yourself, files from a customer, a marketplace, or an old archive. The viewer lets you check what’s actually inside the file before it touches a machine, not after.

Is there a free DST file viewer online?
Yes. This tool opens DST files directly in your browser at no cost, with no account and no software installation required.
Can I open a DST file without embroidery software?
Yes. The viewer renders the stitch data as a 3D thread simulation entirely in the browser. You don’t need Wilcom, Tajima’s own software, or any other embroidery program installed to see what’s in the file.
Does this viewer show thread colors?
For most formats, yes, the viewer displays the actual color sequence stored in the file. EXP files are the exception: EXP doesn’t store thread color data, so the viewer shows placeholder colors for each color block, which you can click to recolor and preview against your actual thread plan.
Can this tool convert my file to another format?
No. The viewer previews files, it doesn’t convert them. If you need a file delivered in a different format, that’s a digitizing service order, and we turn most conversions around in 1 to 2 hours.
Why won’t my HUS or SHV file load?
HUS, SHV, EMD, STX, EXY, and TBF files use compressed or proprietary encodings that browsers can’t decode reliably.
