VP3 File Format: What It Is and Which Machines Read It
A VP3 file is the Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff stitch format read by their Designer and creative machines. It carries the stitch path along with the thread color and brand data, so the machine previews the design and names the threads. Every order we deliver includes it, along with the six other formats your shop might run.
What is a VP3 file?
A VP3 file is a stitch file in the Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff format. It tells the machine where the needle moves, in what order, and which thread color and brand run at each step. It does not contain editable artwork. It contains instructions for sewing a design.
VP3 is the native format for Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines, both made by the same manufacturer. It embeds richer color data than most formats, storing not just the color but the thread brand, so the machine can name the exact spool.
| Extension | .vp3 |
|---|---|
| Machine brand | Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff |
| Stores color | Yes, embedded in the file |
| Stores | Stitch coordinates, jumps, trims, color-change commands |
| Included with your order | Every order, no extra charge |
What a VP3 file carries
A VP3 file carries the stitch path plus thread color and brand information, which is more than most formats store. The machine can name the specific thread at each step, not just show a color. What it does not carry is editable vector artwork. VP3 replaced the older VIP format, and an older Husqvarna or Pfaff machine may need VIP instead of VP3.
Which machines read VP3 files?
VP3 is the native format for Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines. Reading the file is not the same as running it cleanly. Hoop size and design area still have to match, which is why we build every file to your placement, not just your format.
| Brand | VP3 support | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna Viking | Native | VP3 is the current Designer-series format |
| Pfaff | Native | Shares the format, same manufacturer |
| Designer and creative series | Native | Current Husqvarna and Pfaff models read VP3 |
How to open a VP3 file
You can open a VP3 file without owning digitizing software. Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines load it directly from a USB drive. To check a file before it reaches the machine, that is, to see the stitch path, the color sequence, and the design size, use a browser-based viewer.
Every file we deliver can be checked this way before you run it, so a placement or sizing problem shows up on screen instead of on fabric.

Yes, artwork can become a VP3 file, but not by automatic conversion. Auto-digitizing software traces an image’s outline and assigns generic stitch settings without judging fabric, size, or placement. The result reads as a valid VP3 file and still puckers, gaps, or runs the wrong direction on the machine.

VP3 replaced the older VIP format
Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines used the VIP format before VP3. A current machine reads VP3. An older machine may read only VIP and will not open a VP3 file. If you run an older Designer or creative model, check which format it accepts before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is a VP3 file?
A VP3 file is the Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff stitch format. It embeds thread color and brand data, so the machine can name the exact thread at each step.
What program opens a VP3 file?
Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff Designer and creative machines open a VP3 file directly. To preview one on a computer, use a browser-based embroidery file viewer.
What is the difference between VP3 and VIP?
VP3 is the current format. VIP is the older format it replaced. A current machine reads VP3, while an older machine may read only VIP.
Can I convert an image to a VP3 file?
An image has to be digitized by hand into a VP3 file. Automatic converters do not set stitch settings for fabric. Upload your artwork and a digitizer builds the file.
